AB The  porphyrias  are  inherited  or  acquired  disorders  due  to  altered  activities  of  enzymes  in  the  heme  biosynthetic  pathway.  Metabolic  intermediates  are  produced  in  excess,  initially  either  in  the  marrow  or  the  liver,  and  result  in  neurologic  and/or  photocutaneous  symptoms  and  signs.
